Dorsa
- self titled single (Released
March 2003)
Track 1 "The
Banks of Red Roses"
Traditionally associated with the singing
of Sarah Makem, Keady, Co. Ard Mhacha,
this ballad warns all young girls of the
folly in pursuing the "silver tongued
musician". Many versions of the song
exist but Sarah's is somewhat unique:
the storyline is told from the female
perspective and the latter verses contain
very dark, ambivalent, violent imagery.The
melody resembles that of an older gaelic
song "Tá mo chleamhnas déanta"
("My Match is Made"). |

Track 2 "Silver
Slipper Set"
The opening shot of
this set is fired by the Uilleann pipes
on the reel "Flood on the Holm"-
a tune from the Donegal traveling tradition
of fiddler, Johnny Doherty. The fiddle
carries on the Doherty mantle in the hop-jig
"Silver Slipper" that follows.
Button accordion dances to the waifs and
strains of an Armagh highland by the title
of "The Chicken is gone to Scotland"
while we complete the circle in the last
tune with another reel of Johnny Doherty's. |
